Project team / Acknowledgements

Core members of the project’s team (alphabetically) were:

Giorgos Catsadorakis, Biologist, PhD. Core researcher for the project since 2004, he also acted as coordinator and scientific advisor during the first 3 years of the project (2004-2006). He has performed wetland inventorying on numerous Aegean islands.

Nikos Georgiadis, Agronomist, Ph.D. Core researcher for the project since 2004, he conducted wetland inventorying on numerous islands of the Aegean and the Ionian Seas.

Thanos Giannakakis, Environmental Scientist, M.Sc. Core researcher for the project since 2007, as well as coordinator since 2011, he has inventoried wetlands in Crete, Lesvos, Lemnos, Evia, Rhodes, and various Ionian islands.

Afroditi Kardamaki, Biologist. Assisting project activity since 2010, she has taken part in the inventorying of Ionian islands wetlands.

Maria Noidou, Forester, M.Sc. Since early 2012, she has been coordinating the volunteer network responsible for monitoring Cretan wetlands, as well as the Lesvos and Paros islands’ network, as of 2013.

Nikos Panagiotou, Environmental Scientist. Scientific collaborator for the project in 2004, he conducted wetland inventorying on the islands of Lesvos and Lemnos.

Kaloust Paragamian, Biologist. Core researcher for the project since 2005, as well as coordinator during the 2007-2010 period and scientific advisor since 2007, he has inventoried wetlands in Crete, Lesvos, Lemnos, Evia, Naxos, Kos and various Ionian islands.

Dimitris Poursanidis, Agrotechnologist - GIS Expert, M.Sc. Scientific collaborator of the project since 2007, he was primarily involved in the creation of the geodatabase and mapping. He has also taken part in the inventorying of Ionian islands wetlands.

Fotini Vrettou, Biologist, M.Sc. Coordinator, since 2007, of the volunteer network activities regarding the monitoring of Aegean wetlands, she has also participated in the inventories of Ionian island wetlands. Moreover, she manages all correspondence regarding cases of wetland degradation.

All WWF Greece staff members and many volunteers, each in their own capacity, contributed in the realization of the project’s activities. Side actions, particularly in the fields of policy, communication and encouragement of local action, were supported by the following staff members: Dimitris Karavellas and Constantinos Liarikos advocated the project to local and central bodies and nurtured collaborative relations with these bodies and other stakeholders; Theodota Nantsou and Ioli Christopoulou (PhD) promoted policy proposals and influenced decisions on conservation; George Hassiotis provided legal advice; Jenny Lazarou mobilized citizens and organized the activities of volunteers; Eleni Svoronou ran environmental education actions; and Marita Panteri and Iassonas Kandas ensured communication.

The “Conservation of the Island Wetlands of Greece” project was funded by MAVA Fondation pour la Nature. Public awareness-raising activities undertaken by the wetland monitoring volunteer network in the islands of Crete, Paros, and Lesvos have been supported by the Coca-Cola System in Greece, under their “Mission Water” environmental program.
